Topsham Jubilee Food Festival

4th June 2022

Topsham Quay, from 11am

What's on

Over the Jubilee Bank Holiday weekend, Topsham will become a food lover’s destination, with events happening across the town, including a Food Festival (with local street food, and chef’s demos), and an evening outdoor party of local food, drink and music. Finally, the weekend will culiminate with our community Nello’s Longest Table celebration when the whole town joins together to lay out some 350 tables all along Fore Street, Topsham Quay, and Ferry Road, to sit down together and share food, friendship and community.

Marcus has been at the Pig & Pallet in the kitchen for 6 years. He likes nothing more than taking something classic or standard and flipping it on its head, shaking it up, all while using smokehouse elements to create something truly epic. Expect the unexpected with Marcus’s smokehouse demo!

14.00 TOPSHAM JUBILEE PROCESSION FROM MATTHEWS HALL ARRIVES ON TOPSHAM QUAY

15.00 Tom Williams-Hawkes, Salt @ The Salutation
Tom has long had a passion for fish and fish cuisine. The idea for Salt @ The Salutation was born in lockdown when Tom and Amelia wanted to continue to provide for the community and support local fisherman. Salt opened in times when sustainability and local produce are even more important than ever. Come and see Tom for a fresh daily catch, fish cakes, stews, pies, a multitude of condiments, and, of course, Salt. In his demo, Tom will be talking about all things fish and showing some tips for filleting and preparing fish.

16.00 Tom Chivers, The Farm Table at Darts Farm
Topsham born and bred, Tom has risen through the ranks at Lucknam Park, The Pig, and Riverford Field Kitchen before returning home to head up the exciting new restaurant ‘The Farm Table’ at Darts Farm. Here, the team will be taking food off the farm and into the fire… celebrating the simplicity of slow, seasonal, & artisan food, either grown and reared themselves or by likeminded local producers who share their passion for flavour. Tom’s session is co-hosted with George Dart.

17.00 Greg Parsons, Sharpham Cheese
Topshamites Greg and Nicky Parsons took over ownership of Sharpham Dairy in 2019, taking on responsibility for carrying forward a 40 year legacy of making amazing artisan cheese. They aim to use their small business as a force for good, to make the best possible cheese with the minimum impact on the environment, which is why they are delighted to have been accepted into the B Corp movement, the first cheese company in the UK to be certified. For Greg’s food festival session, he will tell the Sharpham story, how he and Nicky came to be involved, and will explain the cheesemaking processes for some of Sharpham’s best loved and iconic cheeses, with tasters on offer of course!

18.00 Ted Waite, Topsham Jubilee Cocktails
Ted is a local (not born and bred) who designs and develops cocktails as a day job. He has created two Topsham Jubilee Cocktails to get you royally in the mood for the evening. One will be a non-alcoholic cocktail, and one will be quite the opposite. Both will be available from The Bar after the demo.

Food stalls

Good Game and Pig & Pallet

Topsham’s own charcuterie and salumi making business, Good Game, will be sellings its own-cured meat products, plus rubs, sauces and more, while its sister business Pig & Pallet, the popular smokehouse restaurant on Topsham Quay, will be serving a range of its fabulous ‘slow and low’ barbeque foods.

Pizza a Legna

Matt and Jake Powell have been bringing their wood-fired pizza van ‘Giovanni’ to Topsham for a while now, so they already have lots of fans here for the most delicious, genuine and authentic Neopolitan style pizza. Their Amodio wood-fired oven can reach extraordinarily high temperature to ensure the pizzas cook in just minutes, and they use only the finest Italian ingredients (Caputo ’00’ flour for their slow-rise pizza dough, San Marzano tomatoes, best mozzarella, extra virgin olive oil and more). Outside of jumping on a plane and flying to Naples, this is the best pizza you’ll find anywhere around here!

Shapham Cheese & Wine

The Sharpham estate was an early pioneer in both growing wine grapes in Devon as well as in artisan farmhouse cheese making. Today Greg and Nicky Parsons have taken over the Sharpham Cheese operation, while Sharpham Wines has just opened new premises on the beautiful Sandridge Barton estate. This is a chance to get acquainted with the products from both, the range of fabulous cheeses made from the Sharpham herd of Jersey cattle as well some fabulous Devon wines that consistently win awards. Eating and drinking local has never been easier or more delicious!

Salt @ The Salutation

Tom and Amelia Williams-Hawkes have created a fabulous new food business in Topsham, offering not only a range of the freshest fish and shellfish but also wonderful takeaeway foods for lunches as well as for special occasions (plateaux des fruits de mers, lobsters and crabs to order, and much more). For the Topsham Food Festival, Tom and Amelia will be offering cooked fish baps, platters and more to enjoy on Topsham Quay, perhaps with a bottle of Pebblebed or Sharpham.

The Farm Table @ Darts Farm

This new and exciting restaurant in Darts Farm comes to Topsham Quay, with Head Chef Tom Chivers offering a taste of foods that are literally from ‘farm to fork’. Darts Farm is all about championing our local outstanding larder and Tom will be offering a delicious taste of the Farm Table to enjoy while listening to the music or watching the sun go down.

The Pebblebed Wine Van

Pebblebed wines are Topsham’s own wines. Geoff Bowen planted the Pebblebed vineyard in various spots around the town and Clyst St George from the early years of the 2000s. The wines that Geoff created have not only won numerous awards, they have also been the favourite of so many of us, who have enjoyed countless good times in the Pebblebed Topsham Cellar. That popular venue, now run with friendly and welcoming efficiency by Carol May, will always be a special place for residents and visitors alike. Meanwhile the (temperamental) Pebblebed Wine Van makes a special guest appearance on Topsham Quay for the Topsham Food Festival! Pebblebed Wines lives on as part of the Darts Farm family and continues the literally ground-breaking and inspirational work of their close friend Geoff, with sparkling Pebblebed a fitting legacy to one of Topsham’s most popular and effervescent characters.

The Bar on The Quay

The Bar on The Quay is overseen by Dan Bekhradnia, former Bristol restaurateur, who migrated to Topsham 5 years ago - most often spotted pounding the tarmac through town on his morning walk or taking in the view from a bench at The Passage. To ensure the celebrations are jubilant, Dan will be selling local ale, draft lager, wines, gin, soft drinks, and Ted’s Topsham Jubilee cocktails.

Andy Chadwick, Topsham Fisherman

Andy, who was a professional salmon fisherman for many years, plying his trade on the Exe using seine nets, as generations of fishermen had done before him (this activity was forced to cease a few years ago), continues to fish on the Exe. For the Topsham Food Festival, he will be bringing a selection of both fresh and smoked fish, always as local as possible. If you’d like some of Andy’s products, you’ll need to be quick, as they are limited and he always sell out fast.

Devon Sea Salt

Discover one of the oldest and most essential products in the world, sea salt, harvested from the waters of South Devon, and produced naturally using only the elements of nature itself, with no machines, boilers or any other mass production processes utilised. This slow, laborious, artisan method - perhaps the first salt producer in England to work this way - results in a natural crystalline structure and mineral-rich flavour that is utterly unique and an important taste of our own Devon ‘terroir’. Salt is something we take for granted, yet we can’t live without it. Come and taste Devon Sea Salt’s range and make this local product an essential ingredient in your home kitchen.

Devon Wildlife Trust

Established over 50 years ago by a small group of volunteers, Devon Wildlife Trust is the only charity that exists to protect all wildlife in Devon and to safeguard our unique and beautiful natural environment. Find out more about the Trust’s important work and many activities and projects, and if you are interested, please give them your support.

Doggie ice creams from Pawesome of Topsham

Topsham is a town for dogs - or at least for dog lovers and dog owners. There is really no better place to bring your pooch than for a stroll around the Goat Walk or a romp on the Rec. Dogs need treats too, so Topsham’s Pawesome pet shop will be on hand to offer refreshment in the form of ice creams specially formulated for doggies. For fabulous human ice creams, the Route 2 ice cream bike will be available in the Route 2 alleyway opposite the Quay.

The Children’s Table

Fun activities and Jubilee crafts for children and the young at heart. Organised and overseen by Reverend Louise Grace, Vicar of St Margaret’s Church.
